Chinook has always been polite. She sits nicely while food is prepared, takes treats gently and really only "misbehaves" if there is a small animal she wants to chase. (That's another topic!) Turk is polite too, just on his terms. He waits for food, but he sits RIGHT THERE. He will wait at the door, but once again, he is RIGHT THERE. I have been working on "move", but sometimes I have to gently and firmly physically move him over when I need him to move, say out of the way of a cupboard door. Two days ago, I need into a cupboard and there was Turk. Without even thinking, I said "Excuse me, please." He moved! Politely! Now when I need either of them to move, that's what I say. And it has worked every single time. I tried "move" at the pasture gate... nothing. "Excuse me, please" gets a neat circle and a polite sit out of the way. They surprise me every day. |

lol, that's funny! Maybe they picked it up from just everyday human actions? I know I say excuse me please to anyone in the house, maybe they picked it up that way?

As a "newbie" to the malamute world I have difficulty finding my way through mine to the door. I say "move", "try to walk through them" or just stand there waiting for them to move. Usually nothing works. I'll try the method "excuse me, please" and see what happens. Thanks for the post. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif)

HAHA what a crack up, they're so unpredictable at times! Here it's watch out bubba and she usually moves or if she sees that something is coming like the cupboard opening. If she gets tapped a bit she moves like the begesus tho! Silly dogs!

Fuji's pretty good about moving out-o-the-way of doors, refrigerators, cupboards......my way. Polite about low / moderate value treats (nonchalant about food); although I have to remind her to be "gentile..." about high-value treats.
Other dogs and people though..... She can't contain her excitement (not to be confused with aggressiveness, which she's totally not). Haven't been able to curb that yet, but she's only just turned 2, so there's still hope.
