good news that the rice is working, but i am wondering if brown rice might have too much fibre and irritate the stomach, compared to white rice being blander and easier to travel through the system ? but - if the brown rice is a success, keep it up, barley is also another good heavy grain but i mash it as it doesn't always break down in their tums even if i cook it forever. |

Robin, my friend who is an RN and who has personally experienced a lot of intestinal problems believes that brown rice is superior. Yes it has more fiber, but for addressing diarrhea the gelatinous nature of the grain is more helpful. That texture is exactly why I dislike brown rice but love basmati and jasmine rice. We've tested both the brown and the white, while the white still firms up the stool, it's still fairly loose. Maybe two steps up from cow pie consistency I would say. The brown rice is really hardening it up to where it should be. If it starts appearing to be too difficult for her system we can either mix it, or switch toe white (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) For now the poop report is sunny with a strong UV index that lends itself well to a nice dark brown tan LOL She's doing much better, she poops only once or twice after her meal rather than once an hour until her next meal, and they're all nice and firm! All I can say is, THANK GOD I was a horse person before her, because I'm already used to inspecting poop (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)

Thanks for the update on the poop. I've inspected many piles and did a brief check everyday on it, everyday when Titan and Loki were alive.

Are you using anything like chicken with the brown rice. We are having an off and on
situation and are trying to find the answer. I am thinking of Barf and will talk to the breeder this coming week. Who is the resident Barf person on the board? I need some additional info. Thanks. |

Thanks Patty,
I need to get an update on all her nephews anyway. I have been searching all afternoon. I think we are turning the corner on this but will have to try to wean him back to another food. Right now he is on Science Diet I/M for a short period and is working ok. This stuff is $75.00 for a 27 lb bag. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/ohmy.gif) Think I am going to the pumpkin and yogurt along with some rice meals anyway. I will contact Teresa about the Barf. Thanks, kisses from Fuzz. He is getting groomed by the breeder on Monday and Tues. Of course I have 99% of his coat already off from his blow, but appreciate what a good job she will do. Plus she gets to see her Tino Bear. We are also going to discuss diet and foods. BTW. After this morning the dog park is out for him. Not much aggression on his part but a couple dogs that are usually good, neutered males went after him. No contact. But we have crossed that line at almost 11 months so he is done. Miss mouthy mother Keeta had to sit there and bark at the dogs that were going after him. What a mother hen she is, but also the alpha. |

Paul, Taku had diarrhea upon arrival and from time to time. We used Iams Probiotics to good effect several times when it was the worst. Otherwise we do the morning dollop of a good organic yogurt with at least 4 strains of probiotic. I remember some weeks on poached chicken & rice. Good luck getting Tino's digestion in order. What kind of worms did he have?

All his test came back negative, but in one of his really bad stools, the one and
only one that bad I saw worms. Took it to the vets, he could not find any. Could be a tape worm tests don't show it. Usually show up in the stools but can't find any. Keeta had whipworms, so we treated she and McKenzie for worms. We held off on Fuzz until we determine our next course of action which is switching from the Science Diet I/D which was a short term action, to another foood. That is why I am asking about BARF and everything else. I will probably be moving slowly to a new diet this week. I talk to the breeder tomorrow when he goes out for a visit and a grooming. Getting pumpkin and yogurt on hand to try also. Have an e-mail into Teresa for info on Barf. He is a whole lot better than a couple weeks ago. But still not as good as I would like in the final product. |

We had a lady bringing her mal puppy in recently and this one would have the runs on puppy kibbles and our vet would tell her to try baby food chicken and white rice - firmed the poop up every time but then switching back to kibbles she would get the runs again. She tried a few different kinds but kept getting runny poo.
What finally worked was putting her on adult formula Blue Buffalo Wilderness which is 35% protein. She is poopin' like a pro now, it was the lower protein that was causing her to have such runny poo. The Wilderness worked for Cody too, he had bad poo when I first got him but the Wilderness really got him on track. -------------------- Tori & her pack; Dennis, Cody, Sparkle and Turbo

Best of luck with the pumpkin. I tried finding some, but all of our grocery stores are still out. I'll have to remember to stock up this November. It's been a couple weeks now with Nikita, we mixed rice in her food with no chicken for every meal, then cut it back a meal at a time. Right now her stool is still solid with no rice. I know a lot of people who had difficulties on Science Diet. They were recommended the food because their vets got kickbacks from selling it at their clinics, a lot of their problems stopped after they switched to a higher quality food, I hope yours do as well!
